Use Airport express with no internet connection to airplay pandora from iphone 4.2.1

I'm trying to use an AE without it being part of a network at all (other than the client devices connecting to IT).

Like others here,I just need the AE for the audio out and want to use my 3G connection. None of the ideas here seem to be working for me. Has anyone spent any more time on this?

Solution!

I had the same problem with Spotify. I have found 2 solutions to this that work.

1. Disable the NAT server in the Airport.
I did this from the Iphone Airport app.

2. Use the solution Tylerinthetub describe in this thread.

Both solution made the airplay drop out randomly. Everything worked well for about 2 songs and then I had to manually activate airplay again. After some search I found out that people that use the airport as a internet hotspot together with airplay sometimes had the same problem. There solution was to upgrade the firmware of the airport. I upgraded my airport express (Think is was to 7.6.1) but it did not help. One other solution was to change the security settings from WPA2 to WEP. Can be done from the Iphone Airport app. This have worked so far. (24 hours). Feels relay bad to run WEP but in my case I do not have to worry about hackers cracking my WiFi.

Hope this post will help!

I did what Tylerinthetub said to do. I have a Atv and wanted to stream video to my tv. It did not stream video but it did the audio from pandora. I am using my iPhone 4 to do this with.
If anybody can figure out how to do simple video from like YouTube or the browser that would be great to know.

Thanks everybody for the support.

Can I please confirm that if I want to use my iPad as a "master" to play music through my home HiFi system, I can set up the AE as an additional device wirelessly so my iPhone/iPad/PC can see it, then simply connect it to the HiFi system, then play music from (say) the iPad via the Remote app to the HiFi system?

What's confused me is whether or not it's necessary to connect it to my existing wireless router using an Ethernet cable. I don't want to use the AE for internet.

Thanks!

got this working in my car just connect to the AE wifi and remove the default gateway ftom the phone's IP settings. it will use 3g for the internet and airply icon will be availabe.

So in the house where I already have a home network via a router, can I place the AE by my stereo & connect via the jack, and NOT have to connect the AE to the existing router? I have no wish to change IP settings anywhere.

Ta.

In that situation you would set the AE to extend your existing wireless network. Then plug it into the wall for power and audio into the stereo. The AE will get an IP from your existing router and anything connecting to its wireless signal will get bridged to your existing wireless network seamlessly.

This is what I do to connect to a radio in my kitchen with the iPhone 5 since the radio has the old 30 pin connector.

Brilliant - thank you. That's how I figured it should work, but couldn't find confirmation anywhere.

Cheers.
