I am (finally) jumping on the bandwagon and planning to get an Airport Extreme and 1 TB drive in order to automatically backup the two laptops in my household. Combined, the laptops have a total hard drive capacity of 450 gigs with probably 150 gigs of data between the two.

I would like to use the remainder of the space on the drive for other general, network accessible storage (media and the like). Is this possible, or is a drive used for time machine strictly devoted to that purpose?

Thanks!

Just partition the external drive into other volumes and you'll be fine. I have a 750G drive, with a ~500G partition for Time Machine. I also have partitions for iTunes, iPhoto and then other crap. TM backs up my internal and the iPhoto drive.

Works great.

You don't even need to partition. I have put files on the external HD I use for TimeMachine without problems. The backups just sit in their own folder.
