I'm looking to buy a MBP, but can't decide on the hard drive, would it be cheaper to make a custom MBP with SSD during checkout or would I be better off upgrading it myself when I get my MBP. If it's the latter, what brand of cheap and good SSD would be compatible?

Thanks!

If you get just a 128gb drive, it's only $100 more and it's borderline worth it. Anything above that is not. The 256 for $400 more can be found for about $200-$250 elsewhere. Even then, it's worth it to just get the stock HDD and buy an aftermarket SSD because you can always get a USB 3.0 enclosure for the stock HDD for around 20 bucks and use it as storage or backup.

Crucial M4 and Intel 330 are my brands of choice, though Crucial is slightly less expensive. Intel's doing a $70 rebate on their 330 line right now for a few more days, so you can get a 180GB drive for around $130.
