Use iPhone 3G as iPod?

Hi my friend got an iPhone 3G because their friend cancelled the service and didn't want the phone anymore. And upon upgrading to 3.01 iTunes says:

"iTunes cannot activate your iPhone because the SIM card is not inserted or a SIM PIN is required"

There is no service with the phone and there is no SIM card. I have SIM cards laying around but there not for iPhones. So now I have a brick because it won't go past the no SIM card installed popup.

Just pop any AT&T sim card in there, it should work.

I think they'll sell you a SIM at an AT&T Store for $10.
