Has anyone tried the 'wired Airplay' with their Mac Mini/MacBook on an M1 iMac? It seems like an overlooked feature I don't see anyone talking about. It doesn't look like it replaces Target Display Mode but still.

Anyone try this? And I want to reiterate wired Airplay (which Apple said there is 'no latency' - or so they claim).

Is it supposed to be any different on M1 iMac? I have tried it wired between my M1 Pro MBP and Intel iMac (2019), and while it seems to have a bit less lag with the cable over wireless, it is still not the same as a true target display mode.

Unless the implementation is somehow fundamentally different on the M1, I don't see how it could have "no latency".

I guess the protocol here (to ensure no latency) is that you use the iMac M1 to process the file on the mini or MPB, like Airdrop or Sidecar.
It's not actual Target Display mode technically. Wired TDM is just a catch phrase created by Apple marketing tactic.
Their technical solution is move the file to the iMac, and use the keyboard mouse of the mini to control the iMac M1.

Coding a program to use the mini/MBP Keyboard/Mouse to control what happens on the iMac is not a terribly difficult job.

If my guess above is wrong, video signal transmitting via gigabit ethernet network and good HEVC encoding/decoding empowered by the Apple M1 CPU is not slow at all.

I just figured M1 would have been optimized for this feature.

Sad to know that there is still a lag when wired.
