I actually had some luck with this issue yesterday by just turning on my phone screen during the initial unlock process and putting my hand over it so it can see my hand. Once it unlocked initially, I turned off my phone screen and it was able to track my hands fine in complete darkness the rest of the session.

Yeah I was also disappointed by this. Settled into bed the other night and felt like watching a movie as if I was in a movie theatre, but no, it couldn't see my hands :(

Sounds like a real movie theatre!

Mine worked fine in the total dark but it was like there was light shining on my hands. I’m wondering if it’s light leakage and a bad fit or some illumination coming from the AVP. Any thoughts? May try to visit an Apple Store tomorrow.

Also curious if these help.
I ordered one and it does work. When I first tested it out, it didn’t seem to help much — gestures still (mostly) worked in the dark. Then I realized that we have a webcam facing the front door, and that has an IR illuminator that turns on in the dark, which was why the gestures mostly worked. Then I tried it in a dark bathroom. Gestures didn’t work in the dark, but did with this IR illuminator. I don’t know how much of a room would be filled with IR light, though.

it does get hot, and so people are concerned about how long this will last. However, I scrolled through a few pages of reviews and didn’t see anyone complaining about it dying soon.
