Hi, I have a mac which already dual boots windows. I want to boot Linux as well, would it be possible to use Wubi (easy way to install linux on a pc) from the windows 7 side for this?

http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/windows-installer

If not, how would I go about installing linux, my disk drive is broken and I haven't been able to find a specific guide for doing it with a usb, so what format should the linux partition be formatted to, what format should the usb be formatted to?

You might do a search on triple booting first...

If your MBP is one that has only Intel graphics, you may be able to EFI boot and thus boot from a USB device. If you have dual graphics, or Nvidia only graphics, there's a good chance you won't be able to EFI boot and also have a functioning GUI, which means you'll need to CSM-BIOS boot instead. And CSM-BIOS booting doesn't support USB device booting, on any Apple hardware I've tried it on.
