    Happy New Year!

This is probably a stupid question, but here goes, When you see used I Phones on Craigslist, etc, how do you know or determine if they are unlocked, not blacklisted, etc before purchasing? Any advice or horror stories out there? I guess in theory you could purchase one and it would be unusable to you?

    Thanks

I wouldn't even mess with Craigslist. You never know what you're getting yourself into. I would go to Swappa's website and look for what you want. Swappa checks the IMEIs and requires sellers to post real pictures of the phones. The phone cannot have any cracks or major damage unless they want to sell their phone in the boneyard section.

Personally Swappa is the only place I buy used phones.

If you use Craigslist. Cover all your bases and verify with the carrier that there are no holds. eBay is a fraud zone. Swappa, as others have said, is your safest bet.

Even if you somehow verify everything (and it might be hard to check in some things), it's still often possible for previous owners to do something (like report the phone as lost or stolen) to get it blacklisted.

There's always some risk involved when buying used from unknown people.
With CL it's over as soon as you walk away so if something comes up later you're on your own.

Thanks. Is there a site or # you can call to check on the status of a used phone?

    No.
You can check online to see if it's iCloud locked but wireless carriers do not have to provide you with other customers account info if the phone is under contract or if it's on a device payment plan etc...
