4k in Safari ? I can't even play a 20 minute 720p video without getting the "this webpage is using significant memory" pop up along the top when watching Youtube. Had to switch to Chrome.

  • Drag and Drop Menu Bar Icons - If you open up the Control Center, you can click and drag on any of the options to add it to the menu bar. So if you want Do Not Disturb to have a one-click menu bar toggle, just drag it to the menu bar from Control Center. This works for Now Playing, AirDrop, DND, and more.
You can turn it on this way, but to turn them off again you need to go to preferences:

 > System Preferences ... > Dock & Menu Bar
Select on the left which you want to customize
Unselect "Show in Menu Bar"

@1:30 the thing that is holding me back from deleting Microsoft Edge and going back to Safari is the lack of Ublock Origin support.

There is really no "great" ad blocker in Safari anymore. I want to be a Safari user on Mac but this lack of good al blockers and the usual oddness on some web pages keeps other browsers on my Mac. The new Edge is Chrome without the Google and it still seems faster than Safari and maybe that is because Ublock Orgin works on it.

Every year I upgraded my Mac within 2-4 weeks of the new release depending on stability, app concerns, and whether I was waiting for a dot release. I didn’t upgrade to Catalina on my MBP until a few months ago and am still running Mojave on my Mini. Not sure Big Sur has given me any reason to update either machine. At least Fujitsu finally released a fix to make their ScanSnap software 64 bit compatible.

Your forgot the prolonged boot feature. 😀
AirPods auto switching works peeerfectly between my iPhone X and iPad Pro, but only works maybe 20% of the time switching with my 2015 iMac. And even when it does connect automatically, I still have to manually select AirPods as the preferred audio output from the Music app. Anyone else having this issue?
My MBP system is still sporadic with Bluetooth audio. Sometimes it disconnects from a Bluetooth output a few seconds after connecting. Resetting the Bluetooth controller (shift-option click the menu bar Bluetooth icon and select an option). helped immensely for AirPods but not for my Bose speakers.

Wipr, from the App Store. Not seen an ad in months.

Widget permanently on the desktop would be nice. Having to action them, I forget they are even there and don't bother.

The AirPods auto switching thing is annoying as hell. I’ll be listening to a podcast on my phone while working on my laptop, and every couple minutes that stupid AirPods Nearby notification will pop up on the top right. Yeah, got it, now shut up about it because has nothing to do with you, computer.

seriously if there’s a way to turn this off I’d love to know.

you can, but i'd like to use this feature - it would be very convenient, if it worked just a little better...

I had to turn it off, because it doesn't work at all!

You could THINK that if you get a phone call, take you airpods from the table and try to answer, that it would understand that you want to answer that call. But noooo - it connects to my mac and starts to play music.
And if I currently listen to something on my iPhone, but have to pause, and then play again, it wants to play things from my Mac or iPad. It has been times I wanted to kill my iPhone and my Mac due to this! 🤬

Great in theory, useless in real life. At least for me. :(

Yeah, and that too. I had that effing noticification blinking like h*ll!!!

Turn the "feature" off: https://www.macworld.co.uk/how-to/turn-off-airpods-automatic-switching-3795856/

One of the main reasons I use Firefox instead of Safari is for uBlock Origin. It does speed up page loading on "busy" sites.

(Another reason is cookie management as I like to have non-whitelisted-sites' cookies deleted on browser exit.)

Simple. I don't trust apple anymore. So i won't upgrade my 2017 iMac.
New rule for me. If I have the latest hardware. Then run the latest software.
Anything else then stick if it works fine..

Did they have to take the calculator widget away.. did I miss how to get it back? Did people stop calculating?

Me! I have a 16” MacBook and I had to disable the auto switch. It does not work reliably, for example music streaming suddenly stops because the earphones decide to connect to the iPhone. Sigh

ugh, that's even worse. my experience is pretty good with the exception of what i mentioned. although now that i think about it - it doesn't connect correctly when i have an incoming call like half of the time)

AirPods Auto Switching - With macOS Big Sur and iOS/iPadOS 14, your AirPods will swap automatically to the device that you're using at the current time, with no need to manually change the device you're using them with. AirPods will work with iPhone, iPad, or Mac you're actively using.
I have my doubts. Airpods do not seem to work reliably with *one* ios14 device - I finish one phone call on airpods and when I receive the next on, I cannot answer it from airpods and when I answer from screen, it goes to phoen speaker and I have to switch the call to airpods 1-3 times to make it actually go to airpods. And five minutes later, another call, again.

But usually Chrome is massively more memory intensive than Safari, isn't it?

People do love that word "massively", don't they?

I've got to ask... do you have something else to do with the RAM, or are you just a linuxer needing to maximize a "free" RAM statistic in a bar graph?

For me Chrome just runs noticeably worse than Safari. I can e. g. watch a 4K/60 YouTube clip using Safari but it's really laggy using Chrome and I just thought this is due to the fact that Chrome is more resource intensive.

Considering my wording: I'm not a native speaker but since Chrome uses far more RAM I think the term "massively" is appropriate ;)

AirPods Auto switching on Mac is a misnomer, it really needs a manual intervention to switch. From the apple support document - (https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT207010)

"In some situations with macOS Big Sur, you'll see a notification about your AirPods on the screen of your Mac. When you hold the pointer over the notification, a Connect button appears. Click Connect to confirm that you want your AirPods to switch to—or stay with—your Mac."

The problem is that we encounter the 'some situations' very frequently. It took me an apple support call to discover the connect button, so unintuitive and uncharacteristic of what you expect from an Apple design. The bad part is that notification disappears in a few seconds and does not stay in the Notification Center. What I have figured out is that you need to remove the AirPods from ears and put it back to get the notification again so that you can click on Connect button. This is the trick that works for me if I have missed clicking Connect on time.

I've had so many problems using Airpods Pro with multiple devices I've stuck to using them only with my iPhone (and using my Plantronics set with the mac) so that "mostly working" autoswitching is a reason enough not to update. :(
