If AirTags are released on April 20 (or later), might it be possible to put an AirTag in your car and have it tie into HomeKit somehow (maybe, via a Shortcut)?
It may not be particularly useful (open your garage door using a geofence?), but I’m just curious.
AirTags are going to be in the Find My app and I’m sure your going to be able to put a name on the Airtag. Let’s say for example, my wallet.

pretty sweet ... that is the future. Does one need this? No. Do I want this? YES.

Should try to do the same thing for my Tesla - shouldn't be too hard since Tesla has 3rd party API. Homebridge is awesome to bring unsupported devices to HomeKit (the Ring integration e.g. is even better than what Ring integrates into Alexa which is surprising since both are owned by Amazon).

EDIT: just looked on homebridge ... Tesla integration for Apple HomeKit does already exist: https://www.npmjs.com/package/homebridge-tesla
Here is one for Tesla using Teslafi API that I wrote

Lots of features already. Some that are not in the above plugin, such as tagged location sensors that can be used to turn on/off things.
Just finalizing adding the option to adjust charge level.

HomeKit can not be hacked. It is more secure than any home app there is. And most security systems are safe. No one can hack into your HomeKit and start messing around with stuff.

It has been shown that ANYTHING can be hacked. HomeKit CAN be hacked, it would just be difficult. But everyone here is talking about HoimeBridge and HomeKit which adds in another layer not owned by Apple and not part of the secure ecosystem.

Exactly. It’s such as small chance that the odds of it happening is like 0.000001.

Ummmm, not quite that low...

2017:

2018:

2019:

I couldn't quickly find an article from 2020, maybe it was a slow year for hackers with then pandemic :p

Point is, you do your best. HomeKit is great but does have an added security cost. Are most people likely to get targeted? No, but probably more like 1% not 0.000001 as you have stated. In fact the laser hack is something I personally cobbled together for about $25 and messed with my neighbor! LOL

all my lights in my home are smart lights. but i got sick of needing to summon siri to turn on the lights so i bought these smart light switches that i stick on top of the old analogue switches. so now when i need to turn on/off the light, i press the smart wifi connected light switches to send a signal to my wifi connected smart lights to turn off. so convenient.

what a world we live in.

You don’t need AirTag you can do this already with you phone and HomeKit automation you have to confirm the opening though for security reasons, if you have CarPlay it’s all on the screen.

You’re gonna have fun with this. To get around that limitation is easy with HomeBridge.

Just add a HomeBridge extension to create dummy switches that are stateless (meaning when you turn the switch on, it will turn itself back off a few seconds later). Name one dummy switch something like Garage Open and the other Garage Close.

Now create two new Automations, one that opens the Garage Door if the Garage Open switch is turned to on. The other to close the Garage Door if the Garage Close switch is turned on.

Now you can create two scenes if you want to open and close your Garage Door from Siri without passcodes and the like. I recommend naming them something obscure to ask similar to a password. If you just name the scenes something obvious like “Open the Garage Door” then technically, someone might be able to yell from your front door to Open the Garage Door and Siri might just do it for them. This is literally why Apple does not allow this capability by default.

You can also tie your dummy switches in with geofenced Automations or basically whatever you want. Just remember what I said above and know the security risk you could be taking.

Cool.... I didn't even think to look in Homebridge for this either, even though I'm a Tesla owner. Only thing I question is how well it actually works, because most (if not all?) of the Alexa custom actions you can download/install for Tesla control seem to have broken as Tesla did more updates to their app.

(I used to use one of those with the Echo Dot in my office so I could ask Alexa about my car's battery charge remaining or to open the trunk for someone, while it was outside in the parking lot.)

in my experience most of the Alexa skills suck ... I have everything in my house set up for Siri (HomeKit+homebridge) and for Alexa (with their skills) ... don't ask why, but I support both systems in my house. Most Alexa skills are either from the companies that just want the 'compatible with Alex' stamp but are written in a very very bad way that makes them impossible to use in a natural way or quick hacks by developers not really maintained - Amazon does not care, they just want to have a big number of skills, usefulness does not matter. Hombridge plugins on the other hand seem to be more from developers/geeks that care and I keep getting updates for my homebridge plugins. So honestly I never had the issue that a homebridge plugin stopped working, but I have many Alexa skills that are in an unusable state and never get updates. There are exceptions, but ...

Also whats nice for homebridge, you can setup a server on your computer you already have (given you have a desktop thats always on) or buy a small box that has all the hardware you just plug it in. Never tried the small box since I anyway have a iMac running as server in my house.

I feel like I've had this ability for some time now with Home Assistant connecting to my vehicles and then relaying them to Homekit.

You write this like they’ve done something only they have achieved. Why is this article worthy? I’ve been automating my Tesla from HomeKit for 4 years
sincere question - what cool projects have you done? I thought this was pretty cool, so if it’s not impressive to you, you must be working on some awesome things and I’d love to celebrate them with you.

I’d love to do this to my 2021 Pacifica Hybrid. The Uconnect app doesn’t work too well.

Well i've done....the same 'cool' project? They've installed something someone else has written - why has the article written like this blogger is the first person to ever do this?!

I'm a dynamic electricity tariff that changes every 30 minutes - I wrote a script that checks the current electricity price against the cars state of charge, if the car is below X charge and the electricity is also cheaper than X then it starts charging, otherwise it stops it - it basically means I only need to pay for more expensive electricity to charge the car when I really need it (eg on less than 20% charge) but if i'm over 50% i'll only put some charge in if the electricity is cheap - if it drops to minus pricing then I stick it on max charge. Pretty sure no one else has actually ever done that - so where's my article?

Very cool. No way I can do this kind of project, but I love that more computer-talented sorts are running with it. I see these instances more as a proof of potential, and it’s great that people are pushing boundaries. Eventually the mothership takes notice of some of these efforts and mainstreams for the rest of us what was once the wonky fringe.

Of course you could - they didn't do anything other than install a plugin that someone else wrote.

@dannys1

I never claimed I wrote the plug-in.

I never submitted the article to Macrumors or to AI, who also picked it up.

I put it up in Reddit for anyone to read if interested. I never expected the interest it has got.

As for what you have done, I think it sounds pretty cool. I was intending on doing something similar. Why not publish what you've done? I'd love to see it and, maybe, use it.

One word, brave. i still have issues with 2 different homes, Either Siri gets them mixed up when asking to turn lights on/off, or Siri turns on the other without notification, the Home app I feel still has some way to go, least with lights no major issues, but with a car....
