Anybody else having to reset their machine in order to get their User logon options to appear ? At the moment I'm getting nothing more than the grey chequered wallpaper and a movable mouse pointer. :-(

The only way to get around the problem appears to be force-resetting the machine (27" iMac late 2009) by holding the power button which seems to allow the machine to correctly boot on the second try. :-/

Basically

this

without the apple logo.

Paul.

It seems you have installed OS X Mountain Linen, not Mountain Lion.

There's a joke here somewhere about Apple's over zealous use of that linen texture 🙄
"In 10.4, it was just the reverse-side background of the weather widget, but now, in 10.8, Linen IS the OS. Simple."

My only advice would be to back up your stuff and do a clean install.
