Right now this is using 76.1 % of my CPU. What is it and what does it do? Thanks

I'm asking the same question: this beastie runs at seemingly random intervals and uses between 85% to 115% of a core. Also, "launchd" often runs at the same time and gloms a similar amount of CPU.

Since I presume this is a "feature" and not a "bug" (meaning it's supposed to do this), I am looking for an explanation, not a "fix." Many of the existing threads for Yosemite and earlier focus on preventing the process from running. I don't mind that it's using CPU. I'm on a desktop, so battery life is not an issue. I would just like to understand what the OS is doing and why.

I'd appreciate if someone familiar with OS X internals would give a brief explanation. Thanks!!
