Users Despair at Apple Podcasts App After iOS 14.5 Update

I had probably 15-20 podcasts which I did not subscribe to, but had simply added a couple random episodes to my library, which are now gone. I have no way of remembering or finding what the shows were now, let alone specific episodes.

explained:

I subscribed to Shows A, B, C, and D.

For Show M, I had only ever had interest in one specific episode that I had added to my “Library”. I hadn’t downloaded the file, but since the episode was in my “Library” I could find it under the “unplayed“ section, etc.

There were probably 15-20 shows like Show M for me, usually containing just one, or perhaps a few specific episodes that I had “bookmarked” over the months to come back to. Now, those all cease to exist because they weren’t “subscribed” (followed) or had any episodes permanently downloaded. Off the top of my head I will be able to remember 1 or 2 show names so at least I can get them back (but will have to browse hundreds of episode descriptions again), but for the most part, this list of shows and/or episodes is gone.

I loved that I didn’t have to subscribe to shows I did not care about but was still able to have a specific episode topic/guest bookmarked that I could easily come back to. I loved that I didn’t have to download every one of them at the time in order to do so, as I often had memory space/data issues. I loved that even though I wasn’t subscribed to them, I could once in a blue moon locate the cover art from my “bookmarked” episode and manually check to see if there had been a new topic/guest that I might want to “bookmark” as well.

I assume I am totally screwed and that there is no way to even access this list of shows to remind myself of what I had “bookmarked“? Unless I can force my brain to have a precise photographic memory from every day over the last few years, I’m f*^ked, right? I’m actually heartbroken because there were some real good things I wanted to come back to but my brain will never be able to remember each one of them. This is so unfortunate, especially in a world where you might have a favourite guest or topic that appears on random podcasts that you’ve never heard of and never will remember their names. Bah.

Not for me. Overcast wouldn’t work at all for me. this used to work so much better in early iOS though 😕
Downcast has always been my preferred app. I know Overcast is highly regarded but I’ve tried it and find Downcast better.

As I said much earlier in the thread, Overcast or check out one of the new apps at:
Some of these are a bit rough, but they are starting to support Podcast 2.0 functionality (a ton of great features, including little things like freedom and the future... but also direct listener to podcaster funding w/ value splits to contributors, transcripts, non-embedded chapters, boosts, search, soundbites, etc.).

You'll be doing yourself and podcasting a favor.

It's very difficult to transfer Apple podcasts to third party podcast apps. I've found some "scripts" online that are supposed to assist. Nervous about using them. Has anyone done this?

Hmm.... yeah that would probably be a bit iffy. The app you're moving to would have to understand *at least* what podcasts you're subscribed to, and which episodes you've listened to already (if not status/position in an episode partly listened to).

What I've done when switching, is just try to plow through un-listened-to episodes (to get that number as low as possible), and then just make a list of the podcasts I'm subscribed to.

Then, I just go to the new app and re-establish those subscriptions and delete all but the new or un-listened-to episodes. I subscribe to over 50, so it is a good bit of work, but not *that* bad. I'd imagine most don't have 50 on their list either (probably more like 10 to 20).

If you have a bunch of just randomly found episodes you haven't listened to yet, or want to keep, then you'll have to do a bit more list-making. But, unless they are episodes no longer available, remember a podcast player is just kind of like an RSS reader, it just downloads content it doesn't have marked as already downloaded. So, it's pretty easy to just start over again on a new app.

Hello,
I'm looking for recommendation.
I go through 40-50 hours of podcasts weekly. It's been a challenge since 14.5 but last couple of days, I guess since update to ios 15 were pure nightmare, episodes adding themselves, wanting me to listen to the same episode 3 times, queues disappearing, I stop listening to an episode and when I come back there completely different episode from a different podcast waiting for me to hit play.
It's just a big shame what they did to a fine working app (before 14.5).
I actually bought another iphone that sits on a ios 14.3 just to be able to still go through my podcasts.

Anyway I want to be done with the native podcast app once and for all and looking for a different, third party one, paid is fine. One requirement - syncing with the apple and/or itunes library. Some podcasts I've been listening for over 10 years, going back to iphone 3G/3GS and I don't want to lose that. Just looking to pick up where I left off with the current miserable native app.

Thanks so much for any input!

I really wanted to like the native podcast. It becomes better after the recent upgrades but more about the cosmetic enhancements on UI, but lacking a few good features to make it a winner.

I would recommend you to try pocket cast. It has two fantastic features, skip silence and voice booster, which are best for you as a heavy user. In particular the first one, it save a few hrs of life, if you listen to talk show frequently. And the voice booster could help a lot if you listen to podcast in a rather noisy environment.

I thought I'd try the Apple app. It's very poor. Totally unintuitive in the way it handles downloads, playback et al. I've deleted it and returned to Pocket Casts. I might subscribe to the latter to support them and get a bit more functionality (e.g. web player). Apple should fire its Podcasts development team and buy Pocket Casts or Overcast or similar.
