I just deleted overcast and moved back to the stock podcast app (been bouncing between the two for a while now). I am sure Marco Arment is working fervently on updating it, but I continue to be annoyed by the watch app and the lack of Apple TV, Mac support and widget support. At the end of the day, I think there is something to be said about the seamless-ness that the Apple ecosystem affords.
Watch app is why I left. He ruined the usability of it

How do you view the show notes? I can only seem to do this on the podcast currently in preview, but no where else, like in the list views etc.

Have honestly not even seen most things people complain about, but not being able to view show notes was the first thing I noticed.

I filed feedback (a bug report) with Apple right away. FWIW, it’s listed as issue “FB9094162 – Episode Notes Missing from Podcasts Currently Playing Screen“.

This was always my favorite app, as I listen to podcasts many hours per day as I do my work. All podcasts were auto-downloaded at the same time every day, so knew where when and how to play. I have two different, very popular, podcasts that didn't appear at all from last Friday. I cannot delete podcasts like I used to. If I "remove download", the podcast just stays for awhile. What was intuitive and convenient is now confused, uncertain, and requires multiple actions, e.g., Library - Shows - Episode (if it's been downloaded that is). Please Apple, scrap this update and let us go back to the original.

Sooooo where the hell are the individual episodes I had in the app? These weren't subscriptions. These were individual episodes I downloaded and were in my Library. It looks like this update chucked everything out of the library that wasn't from a subscribed show. Which... why? And does that list exist anywhere because those episodes came from all over the place. I have no idea where they originally came from now that they've been deleted. This is a real FCP X move, Apple.

iTunes is so much better than Podcasts and Music on Catalina+. The standalone Mac apps are just web/advertising portals, and now the same thing has happened to the iOS versions. Trash all around.
Glad I kept my 6th gen iPod Touch(iOS 12) and iTunes on Catalina (via Retroactive).

Anyone could advise how to display the episode notes in 14.5.

I recalled a video showing in iOS 14.5 there was a new gesture like “swipe up” to show the Notes and frequency, but I could not recall how exactly it was.

Apple majorly broke this (again) in ways not listed in the article.

it no longer remembers what was playing when the program last had control. Try to play something with Bluetooth controls, and it just picks something randomly.

Ask Siri to play a particular podcast, and instead of starting from my oldest Unplayed podcast synced from iTunes, it starts playing a random podcast it decides to stream.

forget letting it stop after an episode and using the play Bluetooth command to have it start up the next episode, doing that now just plays something randomly.

EVERY time since 2005 that apple “improves” this they make it worse. I desperately want this to work as well as it did in 2005 and the early days of iOS.

I’ve been suspect about whether a Macintosh could still manage my podcasts. They keep making iTunes dumber, but it 90% works, but the podcast app on iOS is garbage save for usually syncing with iTunes successfully.

I do NOT want the same experience on a pc.

The way I had episode limits set up seems to be changed.

Also I can’t see updates for shows I’m not subscribed to.

Ughhhhh, I thought I was going crazy. I couldn't find a way to simply just add an episode to library since iOS 14.5.

Sometimes I see a podcast and I don't want to follow but just wanna add an episode from it to library. Can't seem to do that anymore. I gotta download episode which puts it in downloads section of library tab. Ugh, so many more taps for basic stuff.

what's a good podcast app that also does video podcast ?

Running 11.3.1 on my iMac at home, since yesterday.

I subscribe to like 40 podcasts.

The update reset all my download limit caps (after release of 11.3 I had set them all to 3 or 5).

The iMac overnight downloaded 200 gigs worth of podcast eps, and left me with 1.5 gigs on my drive.

Apple should pull this app. I have had frustrations with Apple occasionally over the years, with certain design decisions or functions being removed. But I don't think I've ever seen them turn an app into such a complete LEMON. I never saw any logic to not using the built-in podcast app before, but this is disgraceful.

Are people finding any solutions to this problem? Am I really going to have to go back thru all 40 of my podcasts and set the download limit to 5 episodes again?

EDIT: It seems the download cap “reset“ occurred only on my MBP and iMac. Not on my iPad or iPhone… WEIRD!

This issue I've got. However...

Maybe not understanding what others are seeing, but, can get episode notes in Stations and Lists (eg. my personal Stations, Latest Episodes). If I tap on the upper-right of an episode, I'm seeing the episode notes.

Big complaint for me, seeing massive battery drain while using Podcasts. Downcast app does not drain the battery as bad. Will be using Downcast for my daily shows.

Overcast gives you 10GB of cloud storage to upload stuff. I use it for audiobooks too. 1GB is not enough for some audiobooks.
Pocket casts gives you 10gb too. I thought it was 1g but I uploaded a file today and noticed I was only using 10%. It shows a 10gb limit now

If you go to https://overcast.fm/ there is an Uploads tab which lets you upload files and then they show up in Overcast in the Uploads item in the list of podcasts. I am not surprised you didn't know about it though. Overcast has no documentation or even FAQs. The only reason I found out about this was that Marco Arment mentioned it on ATP. That's the trouble with 1-man shops like his.

yes. 1 GB is enough for most books but I have a few that are bigger and I had to split them because while Overcast gives you 10GB there is 1GB limit on individual files.
I can't comment on Apple Watch as I don't have one so this is not a consideration for me.
I don’t think there is a size limit per file on pocket casts

Apple failed to account for User differences. I listen to several podcasts that are downloaded every day but sometimes not listened to until the weekend. It is very annoying to have to go back to "Library>Shows>Tap Individual Show> then episode. I used to delete episodes I didn't want to listen to, just swipe/delete. Now the episode stays visible with a "listened to" notation on it for I don't know how long, despite hitting "remove dowload". The entire app is clunky and requires managing each show and episode. I do not want or need to be "fed" episodes from different shows, nor do I want to listen to the latest show prior to the shows that came before it. I really like staying in the Apple ecosystem, but am very tempted to switch to something else. Thank you all who made suggestions for alternative apps!

Oh Apple, why do you so obviously hate podcasts and podcast fans so very, very much. Today I am going through all of my shows (a hundred or so) on my iPhone and resetting all of my settings again. Went over to my iPad to see if the settings were syncing. Of course, they are not. Can you please enlist the aid of people who actually listen to podcasts daily and create something that works? The podcast app has gone from annoyingly awful to unusable.

I am having additional issues with IOS 14.6 and Podcasts are not usable any longer. The Library almost never loads as its stuck on loading whenever I try to load a specific library grouping of podcasts. Does anyone know of a fix? I'm moving my subscriptions over to overcast.

We can all thank guys like this for why we continue to live with these issues update after update. Unfortunately, there are too many people out there who will accept whatever subpar decision/product Apple gives just because it is Apple. Apple knows that this is representative of the core userbase, so they have no incentive to fix these issues anymore.
Lol, just seen this. What a load of waffle. 🤣

It finally happened on my last "sync." My 7G Nano is no longer my primary exercise device. Was I just the last person to use podcasts as RSS feeds to sync across devices?

Update: Apple support forums solution of signing out of your Apple ID (Podcasts>Accounts) then restarting/logging out and signing back in appears to have restored my library/syncinc ability.

Didn't work.
