I'd like to use a single 2tb drive for time machine backups and run vmware machines off of. Is this an OK idea? Anyone see any problems or limitations with this? I will also use an older drive I have laying around to clone the mac HD about once a week.

One limitation I thought of is if the drive fails I lose my backup and the virtual machines. Is there a way to get SuperDuper to include the partition with the machines in the clone?

No problem, but during backups via TM you might experience some slow down in the VMs.

Also the VMs will not be backed up via TM.

And CarbonCopyCloner and SuperDuper are able to clone other HDDs too, so you strategy of weekly backing up via a cloning software should work.
