Hi all,

I have just got a new 2013 iMac 27-inch running Mavericks to replace my 2007 24-inch iMac running Lion. The old 2007 iMac has a broken superdrive and anyway I thought it time to upgrade.....

I would like to try to run the old iMac as a second monitor to the new machine. However, the old machine only has a mini DVI port as opposed to a Mini DisplayPort.

Is there any way that I can make a hard wire connection? I am not able to use a VPN solution because my internet service provider does not permit internet sharing.....

In addition, is the Mini DVI port on the old 2007 iMac only an output port or is it two-way...in other words, even if there is a cable or combination of cables which will allow video from the new 2013 iMac Thunderbolt port to the old 2007 Mini DVI port (please advise....), would I still be wasting my time because the 2007 Mini DVI port is output only as opposed to input?

I am trying to save on buying a Thunderbolt monitor as a second screen.....

Any help...much obliged, before I spend another bunch of money......

Target Display Mode on iMacs is only supported starting with the late 2009 models. You will need to buy a display is you want a second display on your new iMac. It doens't have to be an Apple display if you want to save money.

You could hget a display plus miniDP adapter for as little as about $200 or if you wanted something that was real close to the iMac display it would be about $500 or so.

No way to use an '07 iMac as just a display. Sorry.

There are, however, lots of (far) less expensive options than a $999 Apple display.

Definitely sell on Craigslist or eBay and get some good screens on amazon.

Thank you, all, for advice. I guess I had good use from the 2007 Mac......

Time to move it on, and find myself a good second screen......

Share your screen from your source MAC to your 2007 MAC. works great. Also works if you already have a second monitor and want a third, or second external, because you can select to share just the main screen.

[doublepost=1552668827][/doublepost]I've got the same problem but I've got two FireWire ports as well as the one being talked about?
