I've been thinking about buying a 5S off eBay but I have no interests in activating it at the moment. I see the ones with bad ESNs are cheaper. I've searched the internet but found different answers. If I buy one with a bad ESN and get something like this, can I get past the insert SIM screen?

Should be able to use it as an expensive iPod.

If by "at the moment" u hope to resuscitate its cellular function in the future I have no answer.

The ones with bad ESNs are usually stolen. Do you enjoy buying stolen things?
The carriers are cracking down on methods for bypassing stolen equipment locks as well

There's a reason legit ones are more expensive. Carrier's have been able to track down thefts, and at least prevent the bad phones from being used. I would consider it an extremely risky purchase.
