Hi Forum

I have a question about using a gtx980 with two 6 pin connectors.
I use a 12 core Macpro 5.1 with 64 gigs of ram, 4 drives, usb3 card, and ethernet card...

My question is...

Can i use the card with the power of only one macpro power connector with a 6pin to 2x6pin splitter.
I want to purchase a Avid HDX Card and it needs additional power and comes only with a cable
Mac pro Mini 6 Pin to Avid 4 Pin.

But both macpro power connectors are used for the gtx 980.
I thought, maybe it is possible to use the gt980 with one Macpro mini pcie 6 pin to 2 6 pin, which both are plugged into my graphicscard.

I read in the specs, that the 980 needs 165 Watt...

One 6pin powerconnector delivers 75 Watt and the Pcie Bus 75 Watt, which are 150 watts.
So the card need min 15 Watts more. Is this a big problem or better; Could i brick my 12 Core Mac Pro, when using the 980 only from one power connector with a splitter cable, both connected to the graphicscard...
The HDX Card needs 50 Watt...
Thanks for help

If your 980 really draw full 75W from the slot, than an extra 15-20 W from a 6pin is not a problem at all. Real world testing suggest that a single mini pin can stably deliver up to about 110W for years. Of course, if doesn't mean that we should do that, but we can.

Anyway, if the new card just require 50W, and if there is any free SATA port in your cMP, you can use the SATA port to power that card. A SATA port rated up to ~55W.

you can run a 980 pulling power from both logic board leads, but there won't be enought power to split just one into two for the card. I would pull power from one logic board lead for one card port and then pull the other power from the CDROM bay for the other. You can get enough power if you use a Y adapter on both CDROM plugs. That would free up one power plug on the logic board for your Avid card

Connect the graphics card to a 12v car (automobile) battery - job done.

Something like this is probably your best bet.
I'd pull power for for your newer card from maybe a spare Optical drive compartment, and save the two on-board power connectors for the power hungry video card.

I'd power the 980 properly using the provided 2x 6-pin PCIe cables, and power your other card via a SATA adapter from a spare port.

I'm fairly certain that that's all you need to power a 980. I don't think you need to draw power from other areas within the case.
