Using airport extreme as a time capsule

I am using a 5th generation airport extreme connected with 1TB external portable hard disk as a time capsule. It does not do automatic backup at periodical intervals. I have to connect it to do a backup for which I have to enter the username and password. The system saves the password in the keychain but does not remember it because the next time I try to use it then it displays the system login user id and it it forces me change the user id for the hard disk and to re-enter the password. I would like the system to remember the settings and do the time machine backups automatically.

Make sure your username and password is the same on the attached disk as your login username and password on your computer.
