Using an external drive

My question is simple, if I ever had the need of an external drive, all I need is a firewire 400 slot?

Assuming the drive has Firewire 400, then yes. Otherwise, you'd need USB, SATA, whatever the drive required. You can plug a Firewire 800 drive into a Firewire 400 slot with an adapter cable.
