My daughter currently has an old iPod that is acting a little glitchy and her point and shoot camera broke so she would like to replace both. Point and shoot cameras are a pretty small market and there aren't many affordable choices and a lot just produce OK results. We do not yet trust her with things like the internet or messaging, and we don't want her playing games all day (she gets sucked into my iPad when I give her some time).

If I get an older iPhone, can I lock everything down except camera and music? I'm guessing I can put controls on apps requiring approval, but what about completely locking down Safari? It wouldn't have a data plan, but what about preventing messaging on wi-fi? Would I need a new account so she isn't seeing my messages?

If so, how far back would you go to still get quality pictures and useable iOS even if you're not getting updates anymore?

Thanks!

Hey there,

Why don’t you simplify the matter and buy a SIM card from Lyca? They’ve got PAYG option, and they have a plan that’s £5 a year for receiving calls and texts. That way, your daughter can’t use the internet or make calls or send texts—she can only receive them, and you can stay in contact... All for a fiver a year...
