Ive got the Xbox 360 controller driver on my Mac Pro, and I would like to use it to play Portal. I don't see anywhere in the options to set up a game pad, and I was wondering if anyone has figured out how to set up a game pad through the config.cfg file.

I know, I know, I will get flamed for using a game pad rather than a mouse and keyboard, but I do a lot of console gaming, and I am alot more comfortable playing with a game pad.
    Thanks,
    C. Alan

You and me are in the same boat. I can't stand using the keyboard to move; I might as well be using a D-Pad. I really hope I'll be able to use my wireless Xbox 360 controller...

I am trying the same thing with no luck.

I also bought a Logitech rumblepad which I will try to get to work right now. I'll let you know if it works.

BTW, I am using the xbox driver from TattieBogle.Net to no avail...

Im using the same driver. the config.cfg file is where it stores the button and joystick binding functions. I need to figure out how it is formatted, and maybe I can force it to see the game pad.

OK, the Logitech doesn't work either. I got it to do all functions but:

1.) I can not get it to look up and down, and 2.) look left and right is not pressure sensitive so it is very fast left or right. Everything else works great...I'm afraid without support for something like an xbox controller, steam will not be very appealing to me. I just don't play games with keyboards and a mouse.

Console games are easier than computer games.

Lack of accuracy of console game pads means auto-aim on consoles, so people think they are better when they play it on a game pad. But in reality gamepad probably won't help you in computer version of games which don't have auto-aim.

    Well phooy

I tried some console tricks to get the game pad working, in particular, but nothing has worked so far. The only thing I can think of off hand is that the folks at Valve have not worked out how to detect the device on a Mac yet. Hopefully a futre update will fix this.

Woohoo! Ok. So it looks like after I downloaded these:

    360ControllerInstall.0.08.dmg and GamePadCompanion.pkg.zip

I go into the 360 Controller Install driver and saw that the controls were "coming through" (connected). Then I went into Game Pad Companion, and with some trial and error, selected each "element" of the controller (x-axis, button #1, etc.) and mapped it to single or multiple keyboard keys (as they would be used in Portal). The important thing that I missed was that you click "Start", then run Portal. If you click "Stop" it will "disconnect" the controller's mapping to the keyboard control.

    Hope this helps!

One thing I don't understand yet is why I can't get "look up" and "look down" to work with the keyboard in Portal. If it doesn't work with the keyboard, it doesn't help it map the controller to it.

Ok so when I mapped x and y rotation (the right joystick on the 360 controller) to the *mouse* x and y axis, looking up and down worked. I just have to tweak the sensitivity. (Right now it looks up and down reeeeeal slow). So all I have to do is figure out what all the numbered buttons in the driver correspond to on the controller, and it should be all set!

Yeah for some odd reason, Portal (and I think HL2) disabled allowing a keyboard key to look up/down. I believe it stemmed from HL2 and the function of recoil from heavy weapons, and that people were writing macros to remove the recoil. But I might be making that up.

Either way, the fact is that this problem is not specific to macs, and I needed to use a similar program on Windows in order to map the joystick as the mouse in order to use my xbox pad.

Hey any chance you can post your entire mapping for the controller? I also want to try to use this with Portal. Thanks!

    no luck here either

real disappointed. I have the 360 controller driver and game pad companion (i actually bought it) and I can get the left joystick to map to wasd, but the look on the right joystick is mind-blowingly awful. i can't get the mouse's x and y axis to function properly without it looking like i hired my next door neighbor's eight year old son press the up-arrow and down-arrow as fast as he can. it's jerky and I have the sensitivity turned all the way up. i'm really at a loss. with no look up and look down mapping abilities in HL2/portal, the game is simply not playable without an official controller patch from valve. real disappointed.
