Is there a way to use an apple tv to view content from my iMac upstairs to a tv downstairs without wi-fi. Can I connect through an Ethernet cable or
something. Or can I buy a wireless router and create an in home network somehow. Sorry forthe newbie questions I'm just stumped. I live in an area where I can only use a verizon card to get Internet. So I don't want to kill my 5gb limit. Thanks

You can purchase a homerun hdhr, which allows you to connect your antenna up to your wired network. Then eyetv will be able to pick it up and you can watch up to two streams at once over your network. You can also stream wirelessly. It works very well even though eyetv no longer supports the hdhr. It still works..

*oops sorry, didnt realize you were asking about the APPLEtv, I thought you were just asking about tv in general...sorry for my blonde moment.

You can connect your appletv, and stream content via ethernet from your imac if it is on the same network.

Both of the options you mention would work. The Ethernet cable option requires any cable be a maximum of 100 meters, so the machines have to be within 100m of each other or each within 100m of an Ethernet switch. Realistically, I've never seen pre-made cables longer than 50 feet, though. Or you could get a wireless router and just not connect anything to the WAN port (the port you would normally hook up to a broadband Internet connection). You might even be able to set up an Ad-Hoc wireless network on the iMac and have the AppleTV connect to that network. Then you don't have to buy anything new, and don't have to run cables between floors. The Ad-Hoc network will run slower than one using a wireless router, since Ad-Hoc networks won't connect at speeds above 11Mbps (and your iMac and AppleTV can support speeds above 100Mbps).
