Using computer names from the command line (DNS etc)

When I go to Finder, it lists all the computers in our home network, Windows and Mac alike.

Now my question is, is there any way to use those computer names from the command line? Locally, I can address my iMac as Sijmens-iMac and my laptop as Sijmens-PowerBook but not from other computers. Isn't there some kind of dynamic name discovery (like Bonjour) that should take care of this automatically?
