hi all

a while back my MBP optical drive quit working, and now I am trying to figure out a way to use disc utility on the original install disc to repair my hard drive (this is recommended, for whatever reason, when I run disc utility on my MBP's HDD).

I'm running OSX 10.5.8

I have an external hard drive with space on it. But the only other computer I have is a windows machine.

Does anyone have the necessary steps to accomplish this? I've seen vague references to it elsewhere, but I need a bit more hand holding...

thanks very much!

you can't run disk utility alone - it needs some of the OS framework to function. When you boot the install dvd, it boots part of the OS then loads disk utility.

perhaps I wasn't clear: I'm wanting to put my install disk onto an external hard drive as a disk image... boot from that (since the optical is dead)... then run disk utility

this should work, no?
