Just curious I'm buying the 12 pro max 128gb, I'm not able to get higher gb. If I use the SD CARD Reader attachment on the phone is it as good as having built in storage. I figure it would be easier for me to increase the gb storage this way.
 
It would be 100x slower than internal space even if you could use it that way, which you can’t.
there are USB/lightning jump drives but they are only usable with the Files app.

It very much depends. As already said: You can only use the files app. Apps cannot be stored on external storage and also app data cannot.
You can store pics or movies on there and play the through the files app. The picture gallery (photos app) is always on the internal storage and cannot access the external storage itself.

External storage on iOS is not anywhere close to what it is on Android devices with TF slot.

Although I'm not a fan of "the cloud", maybe iCloud is a better solution for your depending on what you want to offload from the main storage.
