Using extra Time Machine HD space

I've been using my external hard drive for Time Machine for a while now (a Western Digital My Book) and have only used up about 100 of its 500 GB capacity. However, I'd like to temporarily use the remaining space on the drive as extra storage, since my other hard drive just died. Is there any way to do this without erasing everything that I've backed up with Time Machine already?

Ohhh, so I don't need to re-partition it or anything?? That's...easy.

No, no need to partition or anything. If you open a window to the drive you have been using with Time Machine, you will see that it maintains all the backed up data in a single folder, so no problem storing additional files on that drive.

Do be aware that those particular files will not be backed up anywhere though.
