Tried to use iPhone 5 as a mobile hotspot on the way to the beach today and tether the ipad to use google maps. The mobile hotspot worked flawlessly but when I entered my destination on the ipad google maps would only let me preview the route and never begin the actual route.

I am using an iPhone 5 w/ a ipad 4 wifi only.

Does anyone have any experience with this and what I may do to fix it. Google maps works fine on the iPhone 5 I just thought it would be nice to use the larger screen on the ipad

I suspect it's because the WiFi only model doesn't have a GPS receiver. It can fall back on WiFi to determine your location but if you tether via WiFi then the WiFi hotspot probably isn't usable to determine your location since it's not going to be in any WiFi database used for determining location. Your iPad won't be able to fall back on tower triangulation either since it's WiFi only.

Was Google Maps able to determine your current location?
