I'm having a problem connecting my iMac to my MacBook Pro as an external monitor. Both are recent machines from 2018 or so and have Thunderbolt ports. I bought an Apple Thunderbolt cable and have them attached at each end. When I hit command F2 on the iMac (which is powered on), nothing happens, nothing at all. This is supposed to convert it over to being an external monitor.

What am I doing wrong?

Thank you for your help!

Thank you both very much. I'm surprised that Apple took this capability away. I wish I asked this question before I bought the thunderbolt cable!

Thanks again. You saved me from wasting time looking for a solution that does not exist.

Originally, the feature was not able to be used on the Retina iMacs due to hardware limitations at the time, as the TB2 port was could not push the higher resolution.

So, it was more like Apple couldn't make it happen, not that they chose not to.

But, with TB3, Apple could in fact bring back this popular feature, but for some reason, they are choosing not to.

Sad....
