I have a 3-yr old iMac running Mavericks and I want to know if I can use the drive in the iMac to install software over my network to my new 13-inch MBP?

Thanks.

Open up sharing from system prefs and tick the DVD sharing option.

You can now share the drive allowing you to read DVDs from the iMac on your MBP...fast it isn't but it will work

Make sure file sharing is also enabled.

After placing the disc into the iMac and enabling sharing on the iMac, how do I access the disc on the MBP?

Thanks for your help!

open a finder window...on the left hand side you should see "Remote Disk" Clicking that should open whatever dvd you have in the drive assuming all sharing prefs are correctly set.
