My mac is a desktop and situated further away from the router, when no other options are available. Can my iphone act as wifi hotspot or similar purpose so my mac desktop can connect to the iphone and to the internet?

My iphone is using wifi connection, not cellular.

Thanks

Nope. Your phone's WiFi antenna is receiving and it can't receive and broadcast at the same time.

It's either receiving or broadcasting... your Wi-Fi antenna won't do two things (either Mac or phone).
