I have a 3rd generation ipod cable and dock. To my knowledge the ipod connector has fundamentally stayed the same and is pretty much now the universal connector for ipod's and iphones.

Before I go for broke and try the ipod cable with my iphone does anyone have any experience swapping cables between the devices?

If the cables are swappable I'd love to keep one at work and one at home since I use my iphone at both locations.

Yes, the USB cables are swappable. I do it. I have one for syncing and one at work for charging.

yep

Dock connector cables work on every iPod third generation and on. The USBs work on 3rd gen and up.

While the firewire version can't be used for syncing as of the 5th gen, nanos, Touch and the iPhone, it will charge it.
