Can you confirm that you can use iWeb and upload the page onto hosting server other than .Mac? Does iWeb simply save everything to a folder than can then be loaded online through FTP and still work fine?

Yes - you publish to a folder then FTP. Works perfectly. There are a couple of things that only work with .Mac though - enhanced slideshow feature, comments on blogs - that's about it I think.

I can't get the search function to work on when uploading with FTP; so that's one more thing. Plus, it's kind of a pain to upload everything each time.

I do it all the time for my website. I try to only uplad stuff that's change but it can be tricky because iWeb doesn't keep itself too tidy - particularly the blog files.

Will have a look at that iWeb flinger thing
