Searched the threads but didn't see anything on this possibility: How about using a standard, old USB-A-to-LAN adapter (like ones I've used with my Air for ages) with a USB-C-to-USB-A hub/adapter? Would there be significant loss of throughput or dependability? Just thinking it'd be nice to reuse a dongle instead of buying a new one...

I've tried using one with the Apple Digital A/V adapter and it does not work. You need a direct USB-C LAN adapter.

Thanks for quick reply. Kinda what I expected. Now decision is which hub with LAN to get, or whether to use a 'one-trick pony' adapter.

It must depend on the Ethernet adapter, because I have an Anker USB-A Ethernet adapter and it works fine when I plug it into my Anker USB-C to A hub or my Monoprice hub at the office with my 2016 MBP.
