Hey all. I have used a windows machine as the desktop at home for pro audio and gaming for years now, and a MacBook for casual stuff and to take with me to work everyday. But for various reasons I will now be using my 2015 retina MacBook pro 13 inch at my desk hooked up to a display when I am at home.

A side note, I can no longer use a regular computer mouse for long periods of time because of issues with my hand and I’ve also grown so fond of the MacBook force touch trackpad over the years that I will definitely be getting the Magic Trackpad 2 for use with my MacBook and display at home at my desk.

Two questions about the trackpad that I couldn’t easily find answers for online: 1) I like to have my MacBook sleep or have the display go off after a few minutes. Is there a way to have the bluetooth on the Magic Trackpad 2 somehow stay connected during sleep so I can wake it with the Magic Trackpad? 2) maybe a broader question but are there any peripherals that can STARTUP my MacBook or future Mac desktop? The last Mac desktop I had was an iMac G3 back in the day (MacBooks since then) and what I loved with the old keyboards back in the day was the startup button. You could just sit at your desk, press a button and everything would start up. My MacBook, and future Mac mini will be under my desk with other electronics and a bunch of wires and I wouldn’t want to crawl back there and press the power button on it every morning.

Now a question about wireless keyboards for Mac. When I decided I wanted the Magic Trackpad 2, I also thought, hey ill get the magic keyboard as well. It looks nice, it charges with lightning cable like the trackpad which is nice. But then I thought about the price to value and I was a little iffy. To me with tech if I feel its worth it, money isn’t really an option. The Magic Trackpad 2 to me is worth it. But the keyboard for $150 space grey. Its just a slim bluetooth keyboard. It doesn’t even have backlighting. Seems a bit basic for the price. Any recommendations for good wireless keyboards for Mac that emulate the design style/profile of the space gray full size apple magic keyboard but are cheaper? With backlighting? Preferably with same bluetooth performance. Id rather not have a keyboard with a 2.4ghz dongle If I can get away with it.

Thanks!

Magic Trackpad stays in touch with the computer when it is sleeping so you can simply press it to wake it. Same as with a Magic Keyboard. For the full size space grey profile you're looking for I suggest Logitech, your local retailer or online store will carry them, check them out.

What vkd said. It'll stay connected and be able to wake up the machine. Other than that... it cannot boot it up . BUT... generally there is no reason to turn off your Mac... just put it to sleep. Me, my family, and virtually everyone I know has been doing that for years... it has virtually no negative effect... and almost no power draw etc. Just go with this.

Concerning keyboards... I've been looking into it for quite some time now myself... the thing is... all the alternatives I found cost basically the same.

Matias keyboards (that come with backlighting tho).
Logitech Craft
Logitech K780

I haven't tried them... but I'd consider Satechi keyboards. With amazon you could easily ship them back if you didn't like them:
