I'm running leopard,
have also tired searching the forums but just get real old posts from 2002 that dont really help

Cheers in advance peeps.

.mac mail and googlemail both work fine with mail.app

Yea, gmail is freakishly easy to set up. You put in your address and your password and click OK. Poof, you are done. All the in/out servers are already in Mail, so you don't even have to do that.

Ok, you also have to enable POP or IMAP in gmail, but that is it. I personally prefer POP since IMAP was giving me issues (folder syncing as well as saying that i had sent an email 3-7 times even though I had pressed send once).

Leopard Mail and Hotmail

Google MacFreePOPs I use it to allow Mail to get Hotmail, the free not paid for Hotmail.

Its nowhere near as comfortable as HttpMail though...I'm getting desperate!

Yeah, I do see your point. MacFreePOPs works for me, but the accounts I use it for are not mission critical (not to mention that my BlackBerry receives all of them also). So there are days when, for mysterious reasons, Hotmail won't get new mail. And then an hour later or the next day, it'll be fine. I can put up with that fine because these aren't my primary accounts, but...
