I am looking for an external hard drive to back up both my powerbook and my partner's iMac and am seriously considering the Maxtor One Touch ll 250 (latest version). I've never purchased an external drive, but I am thinking that it can be partitioned (if need) to work with two separate Macs.

I also read somewhere that the one touch button method could not be used for two different computers on the older Maxtor (backups have to be done manually in that case). Does anyone know if this is still the case for the newer models or can you configure the one touch to work on both Macs?

I am also considering the LaCie and just using the .Mac backup utility but the fact that the Maxtor has a complete restore function is a big plus and my partner is not really computer savvy, so I am trying to get something simple.

Anyone's input on this would be greatly appreciated!

I haven't looked into the Maxtor, so I can't be of much help there. I do, however, have a Lacie external disk with a partition for backing up each of my computers. I use the .mac backup utility and it works great, I just plug the drive in, click backup and it does it's job. The system works great for me, very easy to do backups as often as needed.

Can you partition the LaCie hard drive? And do you back up more than one computer? And lastly, have you tried their free backup software Silverkeeper?

(sorry for all of the ????!)
