I have a friend who will be visiting south Asia next month and is wondering if the magsafe power adapter will automatically adjust from the US 120v/60hz to the overseas 240v/50hz, or will he need to buy a transformer (I've already told him he needs a pin adapter).

Yes it will. I am US based have have used multiple variants of Mac power adapters in India under the circumstances you describe.

However, two points of caution:
1. Beware of voltage fluctuations
2. Don't use the adapter when running off 'inverters' that are common in some South Asian countries with frequent power outages. Apparently, there are some issues with the square waveform produced by the inverters.

I learnt on both #1 and #2 the hard way.
