Using monitor with broken 2017 MBP Screen

So I cracked my 2017 MBP / touch 15" screen, I have Apple care and I am going to take it in but before I do I need to copy some files.

I've searched this but have only find good info for the older MBP , how do I use this MBP with an external monitor from power up?

Power off the MBP, connect the monitor, and boot. Hopefully, the external display will kick in and you can retrieve the data.
