Thinking of buying Apple TV .

I only have internet via my iPhone 7Plus on Three. I understand I will be able to Cast Netflix, Now TV etc from the iphone to the Apple TV.

My contract gives me unlimited data, but only 12gb may be used tethered. Will casting to the Apple TV use my tethered data allowance or the unlimited?

Thanks

Either way read the fine print, it could count as an abuse in both cases.

In answer to your question you will be using your iphone as a hotspot & the ATV will be connected & receiving an
internet signal via your phone. So you will be using your tethered data which is fine I do it all the time when traveling.
My suggestion if you purchase an ATV is to go into settings/apps/itunes movies & tv shows & set video resolution to good
& preview resolution as well as purchases & rentals to SD quality. This will use less data while streaming. A typical HD movie will consume between 3 to 6 GB on average. Netflix is available as an app on the new ATV4.
Hope that helps.

Why not just get a lightning to HDMI adapter from Apple and use your iPhone as your player? It takes tethering out of the equation. 12 gb is nothing to an AppleTV. The ATV is intended to be connected to the internet at broadband speeds all the time. It likes to update itself at odd hours and is generally unhappy when it can't get to the internet whenever it needs to.

Great idea, not thought of that. Do Netflix, NowTV, BBC iPlayer et al all send an HDMI signal out from my iPhone7 or is it App dependent?

Netflix definitely supports full screen HD over HDMI. I can't speak to the other apps you mention. We generally don't have access to iPlayer here in the states. If an app supports HD playback via Airplay, (what you call "casting") it should also do it via an HDMI connection.

So, to answer your original question, airplaying will only use your iPhone data, not your tethering allowance. However you need a wifi network to use it (connected to broadband to set up the appletv initially) I'm guessing you have this already but don't have an unlimited plan at home?

Ok so I went and bought the lightning to HDMI dongle straight from my iPhone 7 to my TV. And tested it. Turned my hotspot off, disconnected from any wifi and Im just using my unlimited phone data...first tried Netflix, then NowTV Then Amazon. All worked very well. The picture qualities on the 21inch TV in my RV is superb. So it seems I can watch as much streamed TV as I like and not worry about Data. Thanks all
