Has anyone used one of the older ipod USB AC adapter bricks to charge their iphone? I've got one that is about 2 years old and is about 2" x 2", while the newer adapter shipped with the iphone is about 1.5" x 1.5". In looking at the specs of both adapters, they appear to have the exact same electrical properties, but I want to make sure before I plug the iphone in.

older power adapter

The bottom line is this: if the iPhone starts picking up the charge then I think you'll be OK. meaning this: the iPhone won't start a charging if the power is out of whack. The biggest problem you might have would be putting out too much voltage, that could cause damage. But an old 30 pin adapter should be just fine.
