Using Safari

I apoligize for sounding ignorant, but how do I maximize my Safair to encompass the whole screen on my iMac 20.

the green button should maximize vertically. Alternatively, clicking and dragging on the bottom right of the window will allow user control of vertical and horizontal dimensions.

by default, safari's green button is auto-resize the window to fit the content of the webpage, and AFAIK, only way to make it cover the whole window is to drag and resize it.
