Rather than paying the ridiculous AT&T overseas rates, I figured I'd download Skype and pay the monthly fee or credit or whatever while I'm in the UK over the summer to call cell-phones and land-lines in the US.

Because this is a US phone, calling from a Wifi in the UK, which Skype package do I need? Will Skype KNOW I'm calling from a UK IP or does it only care about the device?

I used Truphone for this last year, and it worked fine. You might consider having AT&T turn off your voice mail, because that can be a per minute hit.

Use Skype all the time on my 1st gen iPhone when in Japan to call home. Used to use Fring w/ Skype and it worked OK. Now using Skype. Japan doesn't have a lot of wireless hotspots, so in my room I plug laptop into wired network and share the airport w. wep key. iPhone finds it and I skype my wife through it. Just need the right country code is all.

Wirelessly posted (iPhone 3G (white): Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5H11 Safari/525.20)

Skype doesn't care where you are. I use it all the time here in Japan.

So I just need the $2.95 (by the minute would rack up) plan for one month and then pay 20 cents if I have to call anyone in the UK.

That sounds freaking awesome.

And if you're calling to another Skype user it is, of course, free.

Yes purchase the US plan for 2.95 a month and it works like a charm. I use skype to call back home to the US from Norway all the time. For 2.95 a month I get unlimited calling to the US, pretty freaking unbelievable.
