I'm not on Ventura yet (will be in a few weeks, when I'll receive my new mini). I'm wondering about how to setup the "empty" keys on Apple's TouchID extended keyboard, specifically the F13 to F19 keys. I know that we could associate some operations with keys combo in the new "Settings" menu, but apparently we can't do it (or can we?) for these special empty keys (F13-F19), while maintaining the normal default F1 to F12 keys (i.e Screen Luminosity, Search, Dictate, Sound Volume, etc).

So as three specific examples, I would like to know how we can map a full screen capture operation to the F13 key (instead of using the usual Command-Shift-3 combo), map F16 key to open a specific app (say the Mail app) and get it in foreground, and map F19 to open a specific folder (say, the Home folder), while switching to the Finder at the same time to get that folder open in the foreground. Is that possible, or would I have to use a special app to customize the free F keys?

There appears to be a lot of preferences configurations possible in the new "Settings" menu of Ventura, so I would be very surprised and deceived if we couldn't do these mappings without the use of a special app (I used Spark, on a very old system).

I'm not 100% sure on this, but I've seen multiple people reference using Better Touch Tool on Macs without the Touchbar. Perhaps that or some similar utility could remap those keys?

I literally just opened Keyboard settings in Ventura and changed my “Take a picture of a selected area” from the CTRL-Cmd-4 or whatever it was to F19 in about 5 seconds flat. It’s super easy with built in tools.

Better Touch Tool gives you a plethora of options for key commands as well as gestures and even some automation. It would be well worth your time to investigate this great app. Also the developer is always working on improvements and added features. It's an essential app for me on any Mac these days.
