Hi guys.
Sorry, I tried googling this, but did not find a good source.

What I am trying to do is simple.

I have 2 input languages.

With English, when I hold the shift key, I obviously get a capital letter. Which is great.

I am wondering if - when I am using my 2nd language, I can still use the hold shift to use capital ENGLISH letters!
(my 2nd language does not have capital letters, so it currently does nothing).

This would help me so much.

If anyone has an advice, that would be great!

Thanks so much!!

I am not sure I entirely follow your question, but if you press and hold a key, say "u" it will offer you alternative forms of u like û ü ù ú ū so that might get you where you want to go.

And as for new to Mac, have fun learning it. It's a little baffling for a while then boom! it all makes sense. Mostly. It's a vastly more pleasant overall operating environment than Windows (on the assumption you're coming from Windows), though MS is certainly improving things and Windows could conceivably become pleasant one day, too.

Appreciate the answer. I have tried to look this up online for a while with no results. I guess it's a weird scenario. Thanks for the reply though!!!

For the sake of this thread I will try to explain what I mean.

In Windows, when you write in your own (non-english) language, holding the Shift key will invoke an English letter. So let's say you are writing a sentence in Hebrew and then wish to use the letter X. All I need to do is hold the Shift key and hit X. But on a mac, this does not work. Instead, it spits out a gibberish symbol.

Any idea why or how to deal with this?

I am assuming not since this is a very specific problem that only bi-lingual people deal with, but for the sake of the thread it's worth to keep this here.

Thanks!

To write in Hebrew you have to choose the Hebrew input source from your Keyboard, Language selection. Since Hebrew is a right to left written language that source has to be selected.

So let's say you are writing a sentence in Hebrew and then wish to use the letter X. All I need to do is hold the Shift key and hit X. But on a mac, this does not work. Instead, it spits out a gibberish symbol.

To do that on your Mac you will have to switch back to the English language source to get an English capital letter "X". Yes, I know that it's different on a Windows machine. We have that same problem with writing in Korean. If we wish to insert English in the middle of Korean, we must change input language source from Korean back to English.

It's much easier to do with iOS (iPhone and iPad) because keyboards can be pre-selected and easily switched back and forth. I hope this answers your question as I'm not sure that's what you mean.
