Using Time Machine with a disk that already has other stuff on it

I want to use Time Machine to back up onto an external drive. The external drive already had a bunch of stuff on it, but plenty of space for the backup. If I run Time Machine, is it going to erase the stuff that's already on the external drive?

As long as the drive is already formatted properly, then no, it won't erase it.
