Has anyone bought two 2021 iMacs and used them as a dual display setup? I'm considering doing this, to keep a nice Apple only setup rather than getting a 4.5K third party monitor.

In this setup, how does Universal control work, do you still need to wake up the second Mac? Do you still need two keyboards and mice around? Can you Airplay to the second iMac and wake it up using Airplay so you could essentially store the second keyboard out of site?

Gosh, buying a second iMac is cheaper than buying a studio display.

I am also thinking about purchasing at Mac Studio with a Studio display and then getting a second studio display in the future. But at over $7000 CDN, thats an expensive computer setup for home use.

Any ideas what other have done to get a nice second display setup with new Apple gear?

It’s possible to do this using Luna display, a systemof a hardware dongle and software installed on both Macs. I tried it with a new 14 inch MacBook Pro and a 2017 iMac. It works, but is a little awkward, with slight lag in mouse movements. It might work better if both Macs have the M1 chip. Worth checking out, but I wound up reluctantly trading in the old iMac and spending the money for a new too-expensive Studio Display

My desktop has an M1 mini hooked up to two 27 inch 4k monitors, a 2014 iMac 27 and a 2010 iMac 27 with an external 25 inch QHD monitor. I use Synergy across the three computers and five monitors. I run the stuff that requires the fewest resources on the 2010 iMac, mainly office stuff on the 2014 and my professional workflow on the M1 mini.

I tie them together with Synergy which is similar to Universal Control but it works with Windows and Linux as well along with older versions of macOS.

You generally need keyboards and mice for each system to boot up and to establish the connection.
