Using two monitors

Hi,
When connecting two monitors to my powerbook the mac os-x decides automatically which application it displays on each screen.
Does anyone knows how can I control the default location of each application ?

With my setup running 10.4 the app launches to the screen it was last open on.

Thanks for your help.
What you describe happens as long as I keep both screens connected.
But once I disconnect one of them ( I sometimes work with only
one screen) the applications 'forget' where they were ...
