I've had this idea for awhile now but I'm not sure if it would work so well, anyway:

What I want to do is let VMWare read-only from one of my drives and using a different operating system say a linux based one or windows using software such as amarok or foobar2000 to have a go at managing my iTunes music collection or video collection. The idea behind it is what if I had to change to a different operating system and how hard would it be to transition over, simulating some of the headaches I'd encounter.

If your question is "is it feasable" then yes, it's feasable. However, you may encounter problems with this approach that may not happen if you used the OS properly installed on real hardware.

VMWare costs money. www.virtualbox.org is free.
