Can you use wi-fi to, say, use Google Maps, while on a voice call? I tried tonight while online in a drugstore. While on the call, I invoked the map application. I got an alert saying I couldn't use EDGE. Well, sure. There was an instore wi-fi network (password: linksys :D ) and the iPhone connected just fine, but I still couldn't connect to Google Maps.

I thought that was supposed to work. Anyone tried this and got it to work?

Works fine for me. All I could think is that you were not on the WiFi. If you are, you will get the familiar WiFi signal icon at upper left - there will be not blue E. Are you sure you joined it? Maybe the wireless signal dropped and it opted to go back to Edge.

Yes, I definitely had the wi-fi icon and I double checked in the settings app. As far as the iPhone seemed to be concerned, it was connected to the network. And yet...

Yeah, I do it all the time. If there's the WiFi icon, it should work. Note that necessarily not all routers have Internet access, so just showing one connected in the settings doesn't mean you're getting access from it. The icon though should indicate you are.

Very good point. Walgreens does this in some stores. It is used for mobile inventory readers, stock recievers, etc.

Their wifi intranets are not secured in any way?

    Interesting.

I really like the wifi detection and memory on the iPhone. It is pretty cool.
